Wavy Lady Of The Week 014: Sammus
Tell us your name.
What’s your wave?
I am a producer (shout-out to all the women, femmes, and non-binary folks out there making dope beats). I am a rapper. And I am a PhD student at Cornell University in the Science & Technology Studies Department. Over the past few years I have also committed myself to activist work through the organization of DIY shows and events in my local music scene and helping to develop a chapter of Black Lives Matter in my hometown Ithaca, NY.
How did you get the vision to start your wave? Why?
I got the vision to start my wave from playing lots of video games and watching lots of cartoons as a child. I fell in love with the idea of creating my own universe, but even more so I became enamored with the music of the video games I was playing. I began creating my own worlds through countless illustrations and stories, and by the time I was in high school I began composing video-game sounding beats using Reason and MTV Music Generator to accompany my stories and characters. I began rapping after I had graduated from college and was teaching a group of brilliant but underserved kids in Houston, TX. I wanted to use my music to let them know that being a nerd is actually a very dope thing to be in the hopes of engaging them with my teaching. I picked the name Sammus as a nod to the classic video game character heroine Samus Aran.
