Wavy Lady Of The Week 013: Richardine “Yams” Bartee
Tell us your name.
Richardine “Yams” Bartee
What’s your wave?
I’m an enigma. People gave me the name. Most people are unclear about what I do, and who I do it for, and I’ve liked it that way until now. It was beneficial for me as a young woman in the music and entertainment industry. First, I am the owner of GrungeCake, a magazine that I launched after college. I came up with the concept in the early 00s in a letter to an ex-lover who served substantial time in prison. Everything else (MTV, Wildcard, Brooklyn Magazine, etc.) sort of fell into my lap. It took the idea and the work of GrungeCake to pave the way for me. GrungeCake is one of the last places that reviews things and interviews the way that it does. I’m very proud of it.
How did you get the vision to start your wave? Why?
When I was in college, I knew that we (my colleagues and I) were going to need an outlet to showcase our worth (or portfolio.) When we signed up for college, we were ‘sold’ on the idea of working for Viacom companies, etc. As graduation time approached, it wasn’t the case. We all learned about how the real world works. Anyhow, I asked a few friends what they thought about creating a print magazine. They thought I was crazy. I went ahead and made it on my own. I did everything. And I mean everything. I began knowing that I wanted to focus on the journey of people, and not wanting to get caught up in the inevitable drama and scandal in the business. It was important for me to create an outlet to say what I needed to say when I felt the need. It’s that scope of things that has kept my brand so ‘pure.’ I, on the other hand, am like a chameleon. I could shapeshift and take on just about any form, as long as there are paychecks and a challenge. Why? It was a selfish thing at the beginning. Later, I found out there was a need for someone like me.
What do you keep in your self-care kit?
- I’m a lover of words and letters, so I have to have anything tangible (a book, magazine, dictionary, thesaurus, iPhone, or iPad) that allows me to read, write, and reply.
- I love to drink water. Staying hydrated is important to me.
- I like facial enhancers like eyeliners, lip glosses, and matte lipsticks. Usually, they are dark hues.
- I keep a bottle of shea-based lotion or shea butter.
- A pair of shades to complement my face.
